LAGUNA WOODS, CA – According to reports, one person was killed, and four others were “critically wounded” at a shooting that transpired at a church located in Laguna Woods on the afternoon of May 15th.
Limited details are available as of this writing, but reports confirm the incident transpired at approximately 1:30 p.m. at the Geneva Presbyterian Church located off of the 24000 block of El Toro Road.

Taking to Twitter, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office confirmed numerous injuries and at least one decedent found at the scene of the incident.
“Dispatch received calls of a shooting inside Geneva Presbyterian Church at 1:26 pm. Four victims have been critically wounded, one with minor injuries. All victims are adults and are en-route to the hospital. One victim is deceased at the scene.”

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, deputies detained one person at the scene, citing that a weapon was also recovered.
“We have detained one person and have recovered a weapon that may be involved.”

Officials have shared no details regarding the identity of the suspect in custody or any possible motive in the attack. Furthermore, the identities of those injured or killed during the incident have not been revealed, but authorities did confirm all the victims were adults.
Local reports noted that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives were among those working the scene following the incident. Apparently, the Laguna Woods community was built as a senior living community, with over 80% of the residents being over the age of 65.
Governor Gavin Newsom’s office released a statement in light of the incident, which read, “We are actively monitoring the shooting at a church in Laguna Woods and working closely with local law enforcement. No one should have to fear going to their place of worship. Our thoughts are with the victims, community, and all those impacted by this tragic event.”
Authorities are slated to reveal further information during a press conference scheduled for 5:00 p.m. local time on May 15th.
