Unfortunately, like several Presidents before him, Joe Biden had the heavy burden of addressing the nation after yet another mass shooting. Taking place in Texas, the Robb Elementary School was the scene of unfathomable hate, rage, and sadness as Salvador Ramos, who was 18-years-old, opened fire on innocent children and teachers. With the nation hurting and demanding answers and action, President Biden appeared to focus more on the Democrat’s agenda to ban so-called “assault weapons” and crush the NRA than on helping the families that lost children and loved ones. But unlike many speeches before, Biden did have a plan.
As mentioned above, most of Biden’s talking points, as can be seen in the video below, surrounded the need to ban assault weapons. The President stated, “I am sick and tired of it. We have to act. And don’t tell me we can’t have an impact on this carnage. I spent my career as a senator and vice president working to pass commonsense gun laws. We can’t and won’t prevent every tragedy. But we know they work and have a positive impact. When we passed the assault weapons ban, mass shootings went down. When the law expired, mass shootings tripled. The idea that an 18-year-old kid can walk into a gun store and buy two assault weapons is just wrong. What in God’s name do you need an assault weapon for except to kill someone?”

While the debate about banning “assault rifles” has been ongoing for several years, the claims from Biden that mass shootings went down might not be true. According to Newsmax, a study found that the AR-style rifle ban from 1994 to 2004 had little impact. Both James Alan Fox of Northeastern University and Emma Fridel of Florida State University found, “Despite the good intentions behind the ban, its impact on mass killings was negligible.”
It wasn’t just Newsmax that covered Biden’s speech as Fox News’ Tucker Carlson pointed out how disgusting it was for the President to politicize such a heinous act. The host played clips of Biden saying, “As a nation, we have to ask when in God’s name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby. When in God’s name, we do it we all know in our gut needs to be done.” Biden added, “What in God’s name do you need an assault weapon for except to kill someone? Deer aren’t running through the forest with Kevlar vests on, for God’s sake. It’s just sick. And the gun manufacturers have spent two decades aggressively marking assault weapons which make them the most and largest profit. For God’s sake, we have to have the courage to stand up to the industry.”
In the video above, Carlson not only criticized the speech but used facts and data to expose the agenda to ban guns. “Children are dying because the gun lobby is profiting. It’s disgusting. He would say something like that. It’s also untrue. It’s mindless. The New York Times, by the way, said the same thing. The NRA declared bankruptcy last year. The NRA is a husk. In 2021, for example, the tech companies spent more than $70 million lobbying Congress. Big Pharma spent 92 million lobbying Congress in the first quarter of 2021 alone. The NRA spent just 2.2 million total lobbying in all of 2020, a presidential election year. Spare us whatever the problem is. It’s not the gun lobby. They’re not the reason those children were murdered yesterday. It’s insulting and divisive and stupid. This is too serious a moment for nonsense like that.”
