Speaking with news outlet WIAT, Carbon Hill Police Chief Antoine Cobb stated, “When I arrived on scene, I noticed there were two subjects dead inside the home. They had ski masks on.”

Those two deceased males were later identified as 47-year-old DeWayne Turner and 47-year-old Clifton Embry. Apparently, the homeowner had gotten into a shootout with the two decedents when they’d broken into his home, fatally wounding both. The homeowner was also shot during the exchanged gunfire and was rushed over to UAB Hospital in Birmingham to undergo surgery.

As of this writing, the condition of the homeowner, identified as 27-year-old Timothy Wright, has not been shared by officials.

There was reportedly one other resident inside of the home at the time of the incident, but authorities say the individual was unharmed.

Carbon Hill City Councilwoman Oranetta Kirk alluded to the victim as being a staple in the community, saying, “We hate that it happened. He’s a big part of our community so we ask that you send prayers.”

Carbon Hill City Councilwoman Cindy Killingsworth remarked on how incidents of this scale are uncommon in the area, saying, “You don’t expect anything of this magnitude and this horrific to happen in this small town where most people are close-knit and loving.”

Officials claim that a third party was involved in the break-in, and the suspect in question is now facing charges for the deaths of her alleged accomplices.

In a press release from May 27th, the Walker County Sheriff’s Office revealed that a woman identified as 54-year-old Paula Charlene Painter was charged with “two counts of Felony Murder, one count of Attempted Murder, and one count of Robbery First Degree,” due to her “assisting two individuals with planning and carrying out the home invasion and robbery.”

Chief Cobb confirmed that the injured homeowner is not facing any criminal charges related to fatally shooting the two suspects, saying, “I look at it, if someone comes in your home, trying to harm you, you don’t have a choice. The subjects were wearing ski masks and they entered that home to do something.”

It’s unclear whether the homeowner was at all familiar with the two deceased suspects or Painter at this time.
